Allamuchy Freight House

Owner: Township of Allamuchy

Architect: Mark Alan Hewitt, Mark Alan Hewitt Architects

The only train station still standing on the former Lehigh & Hudson River line. Used by dairy farmers in the early 20th century and visited by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940s. Listed on both the national and state historic registers.

Scope of project:
 Stabilize the structure.
Reconstruct the roof, rotting floor boards, weatherworn siding, windows, door frames, floor
   joists, ceiling beams and rafters.

Challenge: The walls were bowed and rotting, which made roof repairs extremely difficult.

VALUED ENGINEERING:  Precision Building & Construction elected to remove the entire roof so the walls could be stabilized. The company used authentic remilled wood from as far away as New Hampshire.

Precision Building & Construction also recycled rotting floorboards by cutting salvageable portions of 2x8-inch planks into 2x4s for the walls.

Result: The shabby, forlorn little freight station was transformed into a well-preserved, distinctive historic landmark that will someday become a revered museum.
